George Benson — Give Me The Night
Produced by Quincy Jones

George Benson was already a well established jazz legend when he began to make crossroads into the pop world. While many jazz aficiondos may have regreted the trend to commercialism in his music, it did help introduce a whole generation of music lovers, yours truly included, to jazz. Give Me The Night is the best ever fusion of jazz and pop.

Quincy Jones had already established himself as the premier music producer with the success of Michael Jackson's Off The Wall. A big part of that album's success was the songwriting of Rod Temperton whose songs are featured prominently on Give Me The Night (including the title track). Other featured players include Patti Austin (she sings co-lead on Moody's Mood) and Lee Ritenour (plays beautiful acoustic guitar on Love Dance).

More 1980 albums:

Probably their best work with songs co-penned by Rod Temperton.  Features Stomp!

Great double album with Philip and Maurice harmonizing in top form.  Features And Love Goes On.

Another party favorite.  You can't go wrong with It's a Love Thing.

The Jacksons — Triumph

Michael's success overshadowed his work with his brothers but this album is great nonetheless.  Features Walk Right Now and Can You Feel It.

Lakeside — Fantastic Voyage

Lakeside is one of the funkiest bands of all time!   The title track got lifted by Coolio.

Randy Crawford — Now We May Begin

Randy Crawford is one of my favorite female singers - what a voice!  This album was produced by the Crusaders and Joe Sample co-wrote most of the songs.  Features the enchanting One Day I'll Fly Away.
